There is a very small handful of perfect films - Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, to name just a few. The Godfather definitely deserves to be on that list as well. It's not that the story is interesting; it's that you come to personally identify with murderers and thieves. It's not that the cast is strong, it's that they play in perfect harmony, never trying to upstage one another. It's not merely a gangster movie - it's THE gangster movie. Any gangster film (including Scorsese's many films) made in the wake of The Godfather will always be overshadowed by Coppola's masterpiece. |
