This Classic movies demonstrates the Civil War for African-Americans in a very positive light. It is also one of the most inspirational war movies ever written from my point of view.
Cool scene: At one point in the film, blacks are not to receive the same pay as other soldiers. Denzel Washington moves others to tear up their pay checks, saying that a black soldier can take a bullet just as good as a white one. After restoring order, Matthew Broderick, the Officer-In-Charge of the battalion, tears his check up also.
Bad Dog! - Though a very necessary part of the movie, early on there are some pretty vivid battle scenes to include one soldier getting his head blown off by a cannon. Racial slurs abound as well, but to be historically true (And this movie does a great job with this) it has to be there.
Personal Favorite Scene: The speeches given by Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington given the night before the attack on Fort Sumter.
Side Note: Great Performances all around by an all-star cast of actors including Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Carey Elwes to name just a few.
Overall: This movie received Oscar-recognition and rightfully so. I can't emphasize enough the character, leadership, and courage it took to lead and perform in the time this movie portrays. Awesome and Awe-inspiring movie, worth owning on DVD. |
