Glory is a masterful piece of work that will leave you breathless. Many years have passed since this horrible war ended and we still do not know it's entire story. This movie tells us one of the many untold tales of the Civil War and does it supurbly. In the fall of 1862, 700 Black men from different backrounds and origins came together and formed the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Matthew Broddrick plays Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and performs him masterfully. Denzel Washington's performance was powerful as well, so powerful that he won an oscar for best supporting actor.
It takes us through the regiment's training at Readville Camp, Massachusetts, and then to South Carolina. Here it wins a small, yet important battle on July 16, 1863, at James Island, two days later it stormed the ramparts of Ft. Wagner which becomes the film's climax.
Overall the story was outstanding, and the acting, especially from the supporting characters was awe inspiring too. Cary Elwes played the colorful, yet smart mouthing, Major Cabbot Phorbes very well. Morgan Freeman also gave a performance worth remembering. The Directing was also very good, although the accuracy of the film wasn't right on, but that happens. The Visuals were very good too, special attention must be paid to the Sound department which also won an oscar for it's hard work. Overall this film stands as a great achievement, that could very well be put into the class of such classics as "The Godfather" and "Lawerence of Arabia"
This has to be one of Hollywood's crowning achievements. |
