This film features a first act that is one of the most memorable in war-film history. It is an internal analysis of the savagery of war before the movie goes on to examine the outer war itself-that war on the battlefield in Vietnam.
Many will find the shift to Vietnam out of place because of the emotional intensity of the opening act- but this emotional redundance is overcome by the character transformation (and acting ) of Modine. The film closes elegantly- but never forgets the savagery of its subject matter. This is its greatness. |
