Action and nothing but. In fact, this movie was far more vacuous than I'd been led to believe. Man, I expected a sleazy morally ambiguous cop who might be identified with the crooks more than with upstanding citizens. I wanted some psychological connection between the adversaries (like what you might find in a John Woo movie only sleazier). Sure, we get some contrast: Rey plays a suave drug dealer and Hackman and Scheider are run-down coffee-slurping cops but that's the extent of the characterizations. Oh yeah, Hackman gets some sadistic pleasure out of busting drug peddlers and he has sex with handcuffs with boot-wearing chicks.
But I wanted some meat with my action. Well, the action was pretty good (car chasing subway car and so on) but I felt empty afterwards (and it wasn't just because of the plot resolution that led to the French Connection II). No, I couldn't feel melancholy or satisfied or anything because I was just experiencing pure adrenalin not thought while watching the pic. NYC looked great though (realistic). |
