Scarier to leave to the imagination? This movie proves it! The last ten minutes of Freaks, which is the "horror" in this horror movie, leaves your mind to come up with what they did to a circus performer who really got what she deserved! The plot makes the sideshow performers sympathetic and under the scrutiny and cruel treatment of the other, "normal" performers. A beautiful, trampy trapese artist named Cleo starts using Hans, a nice but naive midget, that is hopelessly in love with her, because he buys her nice things. She uses him endlessly not only for this, but for the amusement and laughter of herself, her chauvenist boyfriend, and her "normal" friends. Your heart is breaking for their mistreatment and scowling at her vicious attitude toward anyone a little different. When the midget's also good-hearted girlfriend comes to Cleo, and talks to her about stopping the nonsense so it won't crush his poor heart, she just laughs until the subject of his "fortune" comes up. She immediately decides to marry him and then kill him for his money. The freaks then plan out the most gruesome revenge imaginable, resulting in one of the most horrific things I have ever seen filmed. Though only the ugly result of their actions is shot, it will still remain one of the most (perhaps the most!) unsettling movies you will ever see. Sad, disturbing, and completing absorbing, this movie should at least be viewed once by either any fan of horror or anyone who loves good movies. |
