Terrifying melodrama! It's been cut, hacked, slashed and baned, but it's as gory and frightening as day one. The stars REALY are Harry Earles as the love struck little person, Olga Baclanova as the beautiful Cleopatra, the ruthless temptress; Daisy Earles (Harry's sister) as the faithfull little woman who sticks by her man through hell, Wallace Ford, Rosco Ates and Leila Hyams... and the most asorted and grotesque circus shideshows you can imagine. They're all there: the human skeleton, the bearded lady, the limbless human worm, REAL pin heads... after the storm sequence and the shocking conclusion, you'll want to use the words "dwarves" and "midgets" more carefully. And you'll think THRICE before saying "FREAKS". Browning's best effort, right after "Dracula". Though the characters are stereotyped and the film has been over cut, it still scares. Freak out! |
