Great crash scene and WW2 premonitions
by Blue S (movies profile)
Dec 31, 2006
This is not one of Hitch's most labyrinthine movies, but it was definitely interesting with a decent espionage plot with a few twists. The protagonist was excellently played by Joel Mcrea, supported by a strong cast.
Part of the plot depends on instant infatuation between Joel's character and the beautiful daughter of the head Peace Party politician, also central to the beginning of the war in this fictional account before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. To modern viewers, this may seem highly unrealistic and may detract from the film a little bit, but realizing this was part of the culture back then will help out.
Technically, the high point of the film involves a plane crash and the resulting mayhem in the Atlantic. The romance between the reporter and the daughter gets more complicated as the movie progresses, and that's part of the enjoyment. By today's standards, this probably would be rated PG-13. This is an enjoyable film with action in it, and an interesting and accurate look at the maelstrom of the first part of WWII. |
