Don't call me stupid

In less skilled hands,"A fish Called Wanda" could have been a fairly pedestrian caper comedy...this is the sort of movie where everybody thinks they have the upper hand, and no-one in fact does. It's an absolute comic tour-de-force,given the genius casting, with lots of chemistry(and just a bit of biology) between the actors(putting the well-acquainted Cleese and Palin together was pure genius,as was casting the versatile Kevin Klein as dim-witted Otto, whose signature line provided my title). There are many individual scenes that stand out,e.g. Cleese's excruciatingly-phrased apology while, well, under duress. There's just the right amount of pathos(a vital ingredient,IMO,of a truly great comedy),provided by Cleese's foundering relationship with his domineering cow of a wife, and by Palin's repeated attempts to "whack" a witness to the robbbery which fires this flick.Enough said...the net effect is side-splitting...if you haven't seen this movie, rent it,and be prepared for aching ribs. |
