When I saw this movie at the theater on opening night, I had no idea what I was in for. The surprise ending just about killed me. It was so powerful, it caused me to think seriously about my relationship with my own father. I think in one way or another it did that for millions.
This story rivals Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life in terms of all time great fantasy story lines. Of course it's a frivolous premise, but you just have to go with it and if you do you are richly rewarded.
Costner's lead performance is good but flawed at times, not always totally believable which is why I don't give this movie an A+. However, his interplay with Amy Madigan and with the reincarnated ballplayers brought levity to bridge the goofiness of the movie's concept with the heaviness of the movie's meaning.
James Earl Jones is so phenomenal as Terrance Mann that when I left the theater I was sure that such a 1960s author really did exist. He pulled it off perfectly.
Burt Lancaster's supporting role was a perfect curtain call for his wonderful acting career. How perfectly casted for this role.
Now I've seen Field of Dreams 20 more times on cable and it never gets old for me. I never played baseball, and I don't particularly like Kevin Costner, but this one belongs in the Smithsonian. My favorite flick of all time. Movie historians will judge this movie far more favorably than the critics did. |
