This is the movie version of a stage play. It is also a long, complicated and emotional story about a culture, religion and moment in history quite foreign to the typical American viewer. These are strikes against FONR. Nevertheless, Jewison crafts a masterpiece of a picture. Not to be missed is the original theatrical version with the haunting song Far from the Home I Love. This movie should be watched after Dr. Zhivago to help the viewer better understand Russian history - in film, anyway. |
