OK, Helen Hayes radiates and Gary Cooper looks dazed and bedraggled. Lang's cinematography is indeed lovely, and the direction takes on a Casablanca-like atmosphere. However, I had serious issues with the editing and the speed of the script -- barely any time to sympathize with anybody. Some serious issues were discarded in the film also: desertion, for one: everything is alright as long as love and drama are part of the scene. Yes, I'm a guy and thought the drama was overwrought, sorry. Still, it was a fair night of viewing. |
