There is no question in my mind that John Boorman had the right formula when he made this movie. The perfect balance between Medieval and Celtic. The scene at the end where Arthur and Company rides through an apple orchard on the way to their ominous final battle with Mordred is amazingly Celtic and I pride myself on catching that before I heard that John Boorman knew what he was doing. The land of the apples is Avalon and it is the ladies of the lake that give Arthur his sword and carry him off, perhaps not to his death but to the "other world" that was so important to the Celts.
If you love Arthurian Legends and if you are at all interested in Celtic Mythology this movie is a must see. |
