Maybe I'm just a big fan of prison related films ("The Shawshank Redemption", "The Great Escape", and "The Green Mile" are three of my favorite movies), but I was very impressed by "Escape From Alcatraz." I'm not a fan of westerns, so this is easily my favorite Eastwood movie.
"Escape From Alcatraz" is the true story of Frank Morris, an escape artist sent to Alcatraz, the 'unescapable' island prison near San Francisco. The story brings Alcatraz to life wonderfully, and kept my captivated and entertained througout the entire movie. There are a lot of things left out that I would have been interested to see, however. The character development could have been better, and I felt like I needed more of a way to connect with and cheer for the prisoners. But, after all, this is a true story, so there's no falsely imprisoned Andy Dufresne or John Coffey to cheer for in this one.
The acting in "Escape From Alcatraz" is top-notch. Clint Eastwood is Clint Eastwood, and he plays the part of Frank Morris wonderfully. The entire cast is excellent, and all play their parts perfectly, although no character gets the chance to show much depth.
Visually, there's nothing exceptional to say about "Escape From Alcatraz," but there's nothing bad to say about it either. Alcatraz is brought to life fairly well, and the audience sees clearly what an attempted escaper is facing at the island prison.
Moviegoers who want a lot of deep dialogue and characters will probably be unsatisfied with "Escape From Alcatraz," but anyone who is fond of 'escape' stories will love it immediately. The movie brought Alcatraz to life in all its horror, and the captivating story and flow was enough to overcome the film's lack of depth.
