Matt Dillon plays Bob an addict with a strange selection of superstitions e.g. Hats on beds.Kelly Lynch is his partner in crime and long term girlfriend Dianne. They work with another couple the mature (For a drug film) Rick (James LeGros) and a young looking Heather Graham playing Nadine.The film is set in the early 70's when you robbed chemists if you were an opiate addict, or even did elaborate sneaks (Like small theatrical performances just so Bob can get behind the counter and get at the drugs).The movie is an early Gus Van Sant and has William S. Burroughs playing the part of an ex-priest who was kicked from the cloth because of his addiction.After the cops fall for a trick by Bob; they don't particularly think it's funny so they start to harass him.The quartet have to go on the road and the film turns into a short road movie; while on the road moving from town to town,while staying at a motel there's an incident after Nadine (Graham) messes with Bob's hexes and superstitions. Believing they have hit a wall luck wise Bob (Dillon) decides to go into de-tox while his ex-girl friend Dianne and Rick carry on using. An old acquaintance of Bob's believing he is carrying (Has drugs) gets a partner and the two of them nearly kick Bob to death.Burroughs is staying in the same hotel so earlier when Dianne (Believing she is doing the only decent thing) gives Bob a bag of pharmaceuticals he only moves them to Burroughs's room.The film may be short & I may have gone deeper into the storyline than I should of but when while Bob is straight I think because he has never had a taste of a straight life for any length of time, even that becomes addictive to him. A Minor masterpiece;well worth a look see |
