Drugstore Cowboy is one of the finest drug films ever made.Matt Dillon gave the performance of his career here as a pharmaceutical addict and the leader of a group of addict pharmacy burglars. Kelly Lynch is brilliant as Dillon's addict girlfriend and watch for a very young Heather Graham as a naive addict who O.D.'s on Dilaudid, a powerful Morphine like narcotic. As a recovering pill addict I can tell you that this film is brutally honest and wholly realistic. It takes place in the 70's and I wasn't around back then but I can relate to the chracters desperation and the lengths that they go to to maitain their habits. When you're hooked on Narcotics you get phsically and emotionally sick if you don't have them. That is the prime motivation that keeps most addicts stuck in the cycle. This film is harsh and gritty with tough dialogue minus any moralizing and preaching, which would've killed the potency of this exceptional drama.A moody and bleak film, the movie isn't rich with flashy visuals and gimmicky camera tricks like Requiem for a Dream and in a way that's good. It's authentic and all the more realistic. It was also made on a low budget. But it is tremendous and shows the power of good, intelligent and daring filmmaking. The ending is downbeat and true to life and features a cameo by the grandaddy of all narcotic pioneers- William S.Burroughs who wrote the exhilerating and truthful 'Junky' many moons ago. This is truly a gut wrenching and thought provoking film and is one of my favorites.
