A top notch above other fantasy films of its time.

Dragonslayer is a very interesting movie; as far as dragon movies go, this is the only one that actually is worth your time.
But be warned though, the movie is really slow paced, but that's because it actually cares for character development and not to just show off the dragon; while I admit the movie does feel slow, it helps to build up the film quite good to the final showdown between the Dragon and the master wizard.
Yes, this is a very commendable, but not perfect film:
The acting for example, is strong most of the time, but there are times when it's just plain odd and out of place for the situation at hand and that really kills the mood of it.
The story is interesting, and one of the strongest features of the film; not dumbed down either, which is quite a surprise considering Disney had a hand on the film.
The music is your standard average score, not really memorable, but it works most of the time.
The effects are good, but while the stop motion for the Dragon is fantastic, the blue screen used when the beast flies is obvious and can be dissapointing for many.
As for the Dragon itself as a character: Wow! THAT'S what a Dragon should be, deadly, menacing and mysterious. It also looks quite real even by today standards and that's quite a feat considering how much the CGI effects have advanced.
Overall:
Best Dragon movie made so far; beats the hell out of crap like Reign of Fire and so-so atempts like Dragonheart.
Pretty much the coolest Dragon to ever appear on the screen.
The action sequences are few and far between, but they do deliver when they come.
The movie is slow paced, but that's not a bad thing if your attention span is not low like that of many teens today.
Finally, the religious preachery can get annoying at times if you're not much into religion, but it's not that big of a deal.
Good movie to watch for those interested in the fantasy genre. |
