Dr. Strangelove is a satire of the Cold War hysteria. Taken into context, Dr. Strangelove is a masterpiece, but without the context, viewers might just be confused. The film makes fun of the whole "Mutual Assured Destruction" policy followed back then. Through the use of quick humor, Kubrick shows how silly the entire subject is, although it is something as dangerous as nuclear warfare.
The acting in this movie is some of the best I've ever seen. Peter Sellers plays three completely different roles. His performance as Dr. Strangelove is especially memorable. George C. Scott was superb, since he was able to show both seriousness, while popping some jokes. His facial expressions added to the humor especially.
The ending of the film couldn't have been better. It was originally (I think) supposed to end in a pie fight, but what's the point of that? By having the world blow up, all of the ado that was going on in the war room is blown to smithereens. The ending is especially entertaining as it comes right as Dr. Strangelove gets out of his wheelchair and yells triumphantly, "Mein Fuhrer, I can walk!" |
