The debut of the most famous spy (and hero) in cinema history still stands as a classic entry in the series. Although it doesn't contain all of the elements that would become the Bond Formula (no Bond song, no pre-credits sequence, and a very early Q-scene) Dr. No laid the foundation and set the tone for the rest of the series. Connery is at his coldest, with far less of the humor that permeated the series in later entries (largely as result of Connery's eventual bordem of the role and Moore's self-parody). Although it's missing a few elements from the formula, Ursula Andress and Joseph Weisman more than make up for it as classic Bond Girl and Bond Villain. Due to the low budget (it was the first) some sequences seems quite ridiculous (ie, the dragon) but the low-key plot and ruthless portrayal by Connery makes this still one of the better 007 entries. |
