Many have said it before, but if a film is repeatedly watchable there must be something to it. There is an undertone to "Dial M" that crouches below every scene, grabbing at the viewer, making this quiet (there is little or no score in many scenes) English drawing room suspense story paint a darker tone. Milland is masterful, completely believable and carries the movie. There are no "typical" Hitchcockian artistic shots but the pace and chill is definitely Alfred. Greater than the sum of it's parts, one of my favorite Hitchcocks. |
