A tragic adventure story
by Greg Linsun (movies profile)
Feb 10, 2009
Akira Kurosawa takes a break from his samurai epics to weave a fascinating tale about Soviets and the Chinese. In 1907, a group of soviet soldiers are on an expedition through the forest. Along the way, they run into a hunter by the name of Dersu Uzala, a lovable old man who knows the way of the forest. The spend several years with him as they brave the seasons and the forces of nature that come with them. Dersu Uzala's first impresses in the matter of the entire film is done in Russian and not in Japanese. The traditional nature shots that are so well loved by fans of Kurosawa will be right at home with this film. However, the film can get a tad slow at points and the ending is somewhat unsatifactory. Nevertheless, for any fan of Kurosawa, Dersu Uzala is a must-see. |
