This is a movie about alcoholics who's lives spiral completely out of control to the point of dementia.Similar to 2000's Requiem but of course that great film dealt with drugs. This oldie but goodie is very depressing and Jack Lemmon gives a fine performance as an out of control drinker.Things of course, start out well.Lemmon and Lee Remick are happily married and reasonably successful and happen to enjoy drinking...a little too much.It doesn't take long before both are drinking constantly and they lose everything, having to move in with Remick's parents. There are some truly gut wrenching scenes of pathetic power played by Lemmon, showing his great acting abilities.Portrayed alcoholism in a new light and a true one, at that. The ending of this film is somewhat positive (more so than Requiem) but still depressing as Remick chooses to continue destroying herself and Lemmon decides to stay on track even after she tempts him. This is a well made and well told parable. Not horribly entertaining but important and educational. |
