This gem is one of the lesser-known films from the Disney vaults. It is a wonderfully-done tale of Darby O'Gill, the semi-retired caretaker at the manorhouse whose avocation is trying to trick leprechauns into giving up their gold. As the town's premier expert on the "little people", he finally manages to capture King Brian of the leprechauns and makes the deal of his life to save his daughter. (I won't spoil the ending). The cinematography is great, all the sets look just right, and the the acting is first rate. Albert Sharpe is perfect as Darby (you might remember him as the father in "Royal Wedding"), Jimmy O'Dea great as King Brian, and solid performances by Janet Munro, Estelle Winwood, and the rest of the townsfolk. You even get a decent performance from a young Sean Connery in his pre-Bond days. The special effects are good for 1959, although youngsters raised on Star Wars will find them a little cheesy. A charming family film. We watch it every March 17 at our house! |
