This film is a classic study of the human condition. Set in a southern (probably Georgia) prison camp circa the Korean War era, the film depicts the confrontation between one rebelliously resolute prisoner with his fellow inmates as well as his captors. The film is rich in Christian symbolism which may not be consciosly noticed upon a first viewing.
The acting in the film is nothing short of superb. Star quality actors and character actors litter the credits. Newman, Kennedy, Strother Martin and Jo Van Flett are all superb as they deptict the battle of wills which drives the story's theme. No less stellar is the writing which is realtistic, tough and ocasionally humorus. Obviously set on location, the movie transports the viewer to the time and setting of the story. You are there and you identify totally with the prisoners.
I have seen this film maybe two dozen times and each time i look for something to criticise--direction, authenticity, acting, screenplay, score, etc. and I come up empty every time.
This is one cool film! Cool? Hell. It's a natural born world shaker! |
