Even if this film is not as good as the book, it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a very powerful film. Whoopi Goldberg has a star-making turn as Celie, Danny Glover is a true monster as Mister, Oprah proves she more than just a TV talk show host as Sophia, and Margaret Avery is a revelation as Shug. The book had to be toned way down for the film (rmemeber the lesbian scene?), but I give the writers credit for at least being able to keep the main points going throughout the film and to this day, I still cry at the end this movie (the only other film that's able to make me cry, the first being E.T., funny huh?). One of my favorite films!!! |
