Clockwork is one of the most clinical movies I've seen, with incredibly sharp visuals and tight editing. I think Kubrick intended that contrast with the violence he depicted on screen. There is choreography to even the violence, especially at first. But just as society appears to be descending toward chaos so does Clockwork, until randomity rules and man's attempts to rein himself become either murderous or the phony smile of psychiatric assurance. Lacks the grandeur and philosophical distance of 2001 but still well worth seeing. |
