Truly a classic of Twentieth Century-Fox!

These are the points that made Cleopatra a dazzling movie to me:

Elizabeth Taylor:
As a wife of eight later in her life, her role is really for her. Having three of the most powerful men in her empire then, Cleopatra and Liz do have their similarities. The role fitted Liz because of the make-up required. Her make-up in the movie had accentuated her beauty and has made her character a bit more tempting and devilish. Also, her make-up has defined the character of the Egyptian tyrant, beautiful, elegant but cunning, as her eye extender make-up suggests. But when you put away the make-up, it is still the outstanding Liz in her best, being the greatest queen of all time.

Sets and Costumes:
We don't expect miniskirts and other 60s fashion sporties making it to that movie, of course, they wore expensive jewelry in that movie. GUYS, IT IS ANCIENT EGYPT. Their sets and costumes are outstanding enough, however, that's the way it should be and no more, but still, very very great.

Story:
It is a historical film, in the sense that it followed how the queen lived her life. If you have read the real Cleo's autobiography, then mind you, you would be tempted enough to watch one of Liz's greatest films.

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST,
Budget:
Actually, for me, the budget is an asset of the film. This movie is originally targeted at 6 million dollars. According to Cosmopolitan (August 1990), in an article entitled "Superstars get Super-Insurances," Cleo got its overblown, laughable budget because on the early days of its shooting, Liz got meningitis and this brought her to lobar pneumonia, which almost tooh her life. HOwever, the luckless lass, although has already recovered, never made it to the damp London set for 6 months, which has of course brought the insurers to a whopping price to pay for the delaying of the film for what? Six months. The budget was blown because of these:

35 million dollars- budget when the film was half-finished
another 19 million dollars- before the film wrapped up
another 1 million dollars- becuase of the emotional problems that Liz and Burton had during their off-screen brouhaha.

In general, why don't we produce more movies such as monumental as these. I bet,m if movies like these are produced more, then the world would be a better entertainment facility.
