This is Chaplin's most perfect film. The story is a simple one that gets complicated. The tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl and he goes through hell trying to help her. The ending is hands-down the greatest by a mile. The tramp is released from jail and he meets the flower girl who isn't blind all thanks to him. She owns and runs a successful flower shop and she sees the tramp but doesn't recognise him by sight. She offers him a flower and recognizes him by touch and is overjoyed. Everything about the last scene is unforgettable; the music, the expression, the direcion. If you have to see one silent film this is the one. |
