This movie is so good that after you watch it, you'll wonder if it really wasn't directed by Hitchcock! The cast is excellent, of course. Audrey Hepburn stars as the heroine and Cary Grant stars as the homme fatale/hero.
It all starts in Switzerland. Where else? All of those classic suspense films started on the Alps, particularly Hitchcock's old British flicks such as 'The Lady Vanishes'. Hepburn has decided to divorce her husband because she hardly ever sees him and decides that they aren't really married in the first place. But before she knows it, she's attending his funeral and meeting up with some weird characters - three to be exact. The funeral scene where we are introduced to all three crooks is one of the cleverest, funniest, and most memorable instances of black humor on film.
She is told by a man who works at the American embassy that her husband was actually a criminal who stole a great deal of money from the American government. He asks her where it is. Of course, she doesn't know, and he tells her that if she ever finds it, to let him know.
Of course, our trio of criminals isn't quite as lenient as that, and are convinced that Hepburn knows where the money is and just wants to keep it herself. Cary Grant is her only ally, though she is forever alternating between being convinced that he's her only friend and then deciding that he's a murderer.
This movie is surprisingly funny and has a sneaky twist at the end. You certainly won't forget it, and you'll want to have a copy of this comedic thriller in your movie collection for sure.
Actually, when I wanted to write a review on this movie, I mistook it for a 1953 film with the same title, and put this exact review there, too. Sorry for the mistake, if it misled anyone, because I've never actually seen the 1953 movie. |
