Forget "The African Queen;" this film will forever stand as testimony to Humphrey Bogart's acting prowess. His Captain Queeg is a remarkable creation, all the more so for Bogie's ability to make us FEEL for the man, at the same time that he makes us understand Queeg's unfitness for command. Fred MacMurray is likewise splendid, and Jose Ferrer all but steals the show with his drunken post-acquittal scene. The romantic subplot is LAME as can be, but it doesn't distract much from what is a bonafide classic. |
