"You wanna make $14 the hard way?"

While this isn't the best movie, or even the best comedy, ever made, I'm willing to bet that it's pretty far up there. "Caddyshack" has become a cult classic of sorts, and for good reason.
The plot is variegated in every sense of the word. While not all of the scenes are necessary (especially the one involving Danny's girlfriend possibly being pregnant), they somehow manage to come together to make this movie. The best stories involve the big match between Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray trying to kill an elusive greens-ruining gopher.
The acting is good, especially on the part of Bill Murray as Carl. Rodney Dangerfield is also great as Al Czervik, an affably obnoxious lug who exercises no tact whatsoever throughout the movie. Ted Knight steals the show as the anal-retentive, Type A Personality Judge Smails. Chevy Chase seems somewhat out of place as the flaky Ty Webb.
The direction could have been better for this movie, but there's worse out there. There could have been more cohesion in the plot had the editing been a bit better. Still, being able to channel talent out of Chevy Chase earns Harold Ramis at least a C+ grade.
The visuals, while somewhat cheesy, are classic. The cheeky gopher is quite a hoot! Also, the attempts by Carl at killing said gopher are worthy of watching, visually speaking.
While this is by no means the best sports comedy or movie ever made, "Caddyshack" is worth seeing. It's even worth owning, if you ask me. So, enjoy, and yell "FOUR!" when you get to the pool scene. |
