This is a wonderful movie. It covers the early years of St. Francis of Assisi. He was born into a wealthy and powerful family. He then went to fight in the Crusades. He comes back from the war a different person. He realizes that you can't buy happiness, that material things can be a hinderance to happiness. He discovers the soul of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He renounces all of his material posessions and starts to work on rebuilding a dilapadated church. Great songs by Donovan. A nice ending where St. Francis reawakens the Pope to the core beliefs of Christianity. Martin Luther's dissatisfaction with the church led to the creation of a new church. St. Francis changed the church from within. A powerful true story |
