Being a modern Franciscan religious - like the newly appointed Archbishop of Boston - demands a unique perspective on life's priorities - a renunciation of material possessions, for one - that is difficult for many lay people to comprehend. The rules of the order derive from the teachings of the Italian youth who, centuries ago, became Saint Francis of Assisi. In "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", Franco Zefferelli develops a fascinating presentation of the historical events in the lives of two young Italians who became Saints Francis and Claire - filmed on location in and around Assisi. Although the connection may be a bit forced - the film is overflowing with '60s sensibilities applied to spiritual awakening (tune in to religious life, turn on the Holy Spirit, drop out of society) - it manages to create an understanding of who these people were and what their lives and times were like. Zeffarelli breathes life into an old and familiar story and shows us the evolution of the principal characters, from privileged and pampered children of prosperous families to religious ascetics whose lives have been emulated for centuries. Unfortunately the acting is barely adequate - but the story is fascinating and the cinematography and scenery are brilliant. "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" is a unique and elucidating film.
