Despite the fact that this film was rubbished when released in 1938 and gave Katharine Hepburn the title of 'box-office poison' it is and will remain a classic of the sub-genre known as 'screwball comedy'.
It's a shame that the genre died at the end of the great depression and even with minor effects to revive it, it has never caught on again.
'Bringing up baby' is a whacky, witty and hilarous comedy about an ordinary everyday man (Cary Grant at his comedic best) who gets trapped in the web of a flighty, Bohemian heiress (Katharine Hepburn at her funniest) who shows him the lighter side of life.
Both leads have amazing chemistry the film a message at it's heart about lightening up and not being so serious all the time.
Dudley Nichols' screenplay is fresh and intelligent and the direction by the great Howard Hawks superb.
A masterpiece of celluoid wit that has been equalled but never bettered. |
