Not Your Average Teen Movie

The Breakfast Club was a teen movie that every other teen flick wasn't: funny, charming, and most of all real. How real? The movie was shot at an actual school. John Hughes realizes that teen movies represent fantasies of teenagers that take them away from reality. And while Breakfast Club is real, it's also hard to at least smile at this likeable, endearing tale of a group of 5 high schoolers.

John Hughes takes 5 typical high school stereotypes (the athlete, the prom queen, the nerd, the rebel, and the outcast) and quickly changes the rules of this all-too-familiar plot by exposing the inner people within. The two best performances come from Judd Nelson as Bender (who gets almost all the good lines) and Hughes favorite Molly Ringwald as redhead popular girl Claire. There's also the detention teacher who watches them as he ponders what the future generation holds.

The movie all takes place inside a school, but it never really gets old because everything is so fine-tuned. There is very little about this movie that is not great. The dialouge is very funny at times ("Are you slipping her the hot beef injection?"). The characters are worth rooting for, and the atmosphere is very realistic.

My only real complaint is the length, and that's nitpicking because it's still plenty long to be 100% enjoyable. There's something here for everyone: a little drama, romance, comedy, and some mild action. In other words, this is a teen movie that is actually a wonderful film on it's own terms.
