The instant I popped The Breakfast Club into our DVD player, the same sentence went screaming through my mind - "This is such a waste of time!" But boy, was I wrong.
The film begins with five students making their way towards highschool on a beautiful Saturday morning. Here, the viewer gets a slight introduction to each of the characters' personality traits and lifestyle. As the film progresses, you realize they've been punnished, and are all their for an entire day of silent detention. A nerd, a princess, a rebel, a psycho girl, and a jock all sitting together in the same room. And what begins to look like a bloody battle turns into an unforgettable friendship.
The Number One thing I enjoyed most about this movie would definately be the storyline. In my entire life, I don't think I've ever been so caught up in the drama. Although there were no action sequences or suspense scenes, I couldn't peel my eyes away from the screen as the troubled teens shared their reasons for coming to detention.
Unfortunately, there were a few corny lines and unconvincing actors that brought down the mood of the film. For example, at some points the jock seems as if he's reading his lines straight off a teleprompter.
However, the number one thing I didn't like about this film was the ending. After they all decided to become friends, they forced the dork to write their essay while the rest of them suddenly fell in love. During the duration of the film, it was easy to tell the preppy girl and the rebel guy HATED eachother, and maybe the anger between the two eased a little before the end of the film, but it wasn't enough to make them suddenly fall deeply in love.
In conclusion, I consider this film "Almost Perfect." If it weren't for the ending and the acting, The Breakfast Club could have definately made it into my top ten favorite movie list.
What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you imagine a teen movie? Vulgar jokes, sex, and a horrible storyline, right? Ready for a change? See this film!
