Okay, so what do YOU know?
Truman Capote hated the film. And it was NOT based on a book but rather a short story.
But you had to be alive in '61 and before to appreciate the times, the nuances, and especially the fact that it was the last great glamour movie.
Women pretended to be virtuous then. Men expected, if not outright virginity, then at least limited experience.
Holly was really a hooker in the story but that would have been an impossible obstacle in a '61 blockbuster where romance and happy endings were the stuff of film fare.
One of my favorite scenes is when she announces to "Fred" that she is as fat as a pig. This from an anorexic who trained with the help of bulemia. She is sooooooooooo gorgeous and this from a gay man. I adored every precious moment of her on film. She is THE female star of the '60's with Julie Christie a close second.
B at T is about a lost soul who for all intents and purposes is pretty shallow. She lives in fantasy and in the end is lured away by all the trappings of a Perfect Mate.(This describes the whole 60's generation but I am one of the few brave enough to admit it. If I weren't right we would have a black president and all be living in a co-p near Berkeley. And of course George Bush and Rush Limbaugh would have already commited suicide from the strain) But since I am a bit older than most who will read this review I can tell you that as cynical as I have become, I remember the romantic stuff with all those I really loved and the sex, while great, was, alas, not something my memory bank has not chosen to recall with the same warm fuzzies.
See this film with a modicum of respect. It is a bit dated, to be sure, but it comes from a time when hope was something to be experienced and not put down. Get caught up in the fun and the fantasy and don't be too concerned that it is not politically correct. Based on itself alone it is as I wrote in the headline. But perhaps only for me. |
