Body Heat is a steamy, sexy, and intelligent film noir. William Hurt plays a womanizing lawyer who meets a sultry and seductive woman (Kathleen Turner) married to a rich man. She seduces him and together they come up with the perfect plan to eliminate her husband and take his fortune without getting caught but is every plan completely perfect?
Body Heat follows many of the traditional things that make noir so appealing. The characters speak with witty and suggestive dialogue, the steamy romance between forbidden lovers, and so on. Ultimately, I think this works against the movie a bit in that it follows many of the conventions of noir films almost too closely that it takes some of the suspense of the film away. However, the ending of the film is still done in a fresh and original way to recommend the film.
The acting was great all around. Hurt and Turner, who had just relatively started acting, were excellent together. Turner was especially great as she sold her character very well. At one point, she tells Hurt that she does love him and you genuinely don’t know whether she is being honest or not. Danson was excellent and Rourke was surprisingly great in a small role.
The directing was very well done by Kasdan. The movie has a great atmosphere, setting and a great score to compliment and aid the atmosphere of the movie.
There is not much in terms of visuals other than the steamy scenes between the two lead actors.
Body Heat follows traditional film noir guidelines closely, almost too closely for my taste. The movie is still interesting and pulls off a fresh and new ending. The characters are well written and acted. If you are a fan of film noir, then you should definitely enjoy this movie. Recommended. |
