Saving Chinese American Identity

As the new century begin, Asians are beginning to grow and succeed in America. From business to medicine to law and even sports (hard to believe), the second generation Asians are creating a new image of success replacing the Chinese delivery/nail shop/laundromat people. However, Asians, especially men, still lack an image in the entertainment business. Asian men are viewed as geeks, nerds, physically challenged people who are smart but "boring". This is why, it is important to make Asian based movies, music and entertainment business in general.

This movie is important because it helps to create and develop a sense of Chinese American identity. Since Joy Luck Club and Better Luck Tomorrow, this is a continuation of Asians trying to establish themselves in the movie industry.

In regards to this particular movie, there many surprises which brings out the evident struggle between different Chinese American generation gap. One thing I didn't like is the message it sends out to the public. In the Chinese culture or any other culture, we are taught to respect our parents. It is easy to live life based on a self centered "me" and much harder to live life surrouding parents. They gave us life, raised us, changed our diapers.....it is only just that we return one's love by doing the same once parents get old. Indeed, one has to live the life that they choose, but there better ways to resolve matters of such in the movie in a more suttle way to save the parent's face. Then again, the movie would be boring if there were no "volcanic eruptions" and embarrasing moments.

In short, just keep in mind that this is only a movie. Take the message with only a grain of salt. If you are thankful of what your parents have done for you, then SAVE THIER FACES!!!!!
