Some people say that this is one of the most offensive movies ever to be made, but what a lot of them are missing is that the movie is ridiculing the racists, not encouraging racism. Sure, in the begining of one scene, the macho cowboys begin hitting the "gay" dancers 'just because' (long before the phrase 'hate crime' was conceived), but later you see a couple of the cowboys "chatting up" the dancers and sneaking off together (long before 'Brokeback Mountain' told us there were gay cowboys). This movie holds nothing about the spoof, even making fun of itself. There is very little "PC" about this film on the surface, but it's the 'bad guys' and a few idiots that exhibit the non "PC" behavior.
They take on just about every form of racism, not only African-Americans (with a somewhat overly generous use of the 'N-word', but Jews, Gays, Religon, movie stereotypes, Nazis, the KKK, politicians (both the corrupt and the spin doctors), Chinese, Irish, and even what inevitably happens when cowboys eat beans. Definately an "equal opportunity offender." Just remember--it's simply about getting a laugh, usually at the racist's expense.
If you're looking for a movie that spoofs everything it can-anyway it can, and you can overlook sometimes crude and ostensibly offensive humor--this is a great movie. Note: when they edit this for braodcast TV (and some cable channels), it looses a lot of it's humor.
If you can't overlook the so-called offensiveness used to satirize and just enjoy the movie, then as Slim Pickens character says, "Piss on you, I'm working for Mel Brooks!" |
