Prophetic, thought-invoking sci-fi masterpiece

BLADE RUNNER is a classic. While some moviegoers shall dismiss this as a worthless wreck of sci-fi nonsense, the investigative viewer, should he or she look closer, shall find a true masterpiece.
Arguably director Ridley Scott's greatest film (with ALIEN as the competitor), BLADE RUNNER was adapted from Philip K. Dick's short story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", and is set in futuristic, completely re-modeled 2019 A.D. Los Angeles (which now seems closer to 2100 A.D. Los Angeles). This prophetic vision of the future involves a "blade runner" (or cop - Harrison Ford) trying to track down a group of cyborgs whose only wish is to become human.
Let's look at the different aspects of the film. The directing? Terrific. You can tell everyone knows exactly what they're doing. Scott is a master director. The writing? Great. While confusing to some with "low intellect" (if you don't know what that means, you're one of 'em), it's a great and thought-provoking script that'll keep you hooked through the whole film. The acting? Very nice. Ford is (as always) excellent, and the supporting actors (especially Rutger Hauer) are doing their greatest. The music? Wow, one of the true high points of the film. Vangelis' now classic score is one of the oddest, albeit greatest and most depressing, ever written. Of course, the true highlight of the film is the production design: the greatest (possibly) I've ever seen on film. It brings such realism to 2019 L.A. you'll think the crew actually traveled through time to get there!
The director's cut is the version I would recommend. It removes that dumb "up" ending as well as Ford's useless voice-over.
Definitely a true masterpiece. A must-see for sci-fi fans. |
