Black Moon Rising

Though a flawed decade in film, we should respect the 80’s for dark, gritty, little films like this. Black Moon Rising, this action based car theft entry, is penned by legendary anti-hero creator John Carpenter. True to form John has presented us with another unscrupulous protagonist who although is amoral, his charm, charisma, and cool quotient win us over and has us hoping he completes his mission and gets the girl. Though Quint is no Snake Plisken, he holds his own and puts his own stamp on likable car thieves. BMR is set in LA. Quint is a professional thief who is contracted by the government to steal a cassette from a company under investigation. The heist goes wrong and Quint is forced to hide the cassette in The Black Moon, a concept hybrid race car that can reach speeds of 300mph. Linda Hamilton from Terminator fame plays a professional car thief who steals The Black Moon forcing Quint to steal it back for the cassette hidden inside. There are not many or any plot twists in this film but Robert Vaughn plays a juicy socio-pathic villain for Quint to dance with. Unintentional cheesy dialogue comes from some supporting characters but this can be overlooked because this movie has Sarah Conner screaming down a tunnel complex at 300mph in the Black Moon. Her calm composure as the walls blur by gives us a vision to come when she becomes the coolest walking arsenal this side of Ripley in Terminator 2. Black Moon Rising could have been better but what we have is a little above average actioner with a great script. This was one of thousands of movies in the 80’s in need of a bigger budget. I recommend this movie to a diehard action fan or movie buff. Or, anyone who fancies centerline rims. |
