I Could not sleep

A film made by Howard Hawks based on a screenplay written by William Faulkner & Leigh Brackett, which in turn was adapted from the novel of the same name by Raymond Chandler. One of Hollywood’s earliest attempts at the ‘Genre’ film-noir, with a famous partnership starring in this film, it made for a brilliant on screen chemistry between the two lead characters. Philip Marlowe played by Humphrey Bogart is asked to see General Sternwood, who explains what he expects P.I. Marlowe to do, while at the Sternwood estate we are introduced to the two sisters the bubbly and slightly younger daughter Carmen played by Martha Vickers and slightly older but more mature of the two women Vivian played seductively by Lauren Bacall.
The job Marlowe is hired to do is to find a favorite employee of the General’s but even this early in the film Marlowe can smell a rat and follows his own hunches; the story untangles to reveal a web of bribery, mystery and murder.
A superb little film probably made on the studio production line, the way they made films in the forties, but Hawk’s has pulled a classic from the hat, a great film, with some excellent performances not least by the two main characters.
