Classic Film Noir
by Mr. B (movies profile)
Oct 21, 2008
If you are looking for the quintessential film noir, this is it. Screenplay by William Faulkner, and based on the Raymond Chandler novel, the twists and turns of this story make it unparalleled it this day. With an ending that can still spark debates as to who really killed Sean Regan (I don't think it could possibly be the person accused or the person Marlowe is covering for) the ambiguity makes the ending absolutely delicious. The acting is memorable, but not necessarily from the leads. Sure, Bogart is Bogart and Bacall is Bacall, but it is the support cast of Carmen Sternwood (Vickers) and other like the librarian, taxi driver and Agnus that really fill out the film.
Like other films of the 1940's this film had yet to feel in influence of Citizen Kane. As a result this film is technically unspectacular. That being said, this is still the finest example of film noir, bar none. |
