Humphery Bogart and Lauren Bacall give two of the most memorable performances in film over the course of the 1946 classic. Based on the Raymond Chandler novel, the complex plot involves murder, extortion and drugs swirling around private eye Phillip Marlowe (Bogart) like a hurricane. The rapier-like fencing between Bogey and Bacall reflects the genius of the screen writer, none other than William Faulkner. The inability in 1946 to refer openly to some aspects of the novel, such as drug use or homosexuality, produces some confused aspects in the plot development. (The inferior 1978 version with Robert Mitchum is explicit therefore clearer). However, no one who likes detective stories and mystery should miss the granddaddy of them all. |
