It really didn't deserve 11 Oscars...

Ben-Hur, they say, is the grandest film of all time: One of the longest movies ever made and over 300 sets. But the numbers don't speak for themselves.
This film is an instant classic, I must say, it's chariot race is legendary, and Ridley Scott's film Gladiator is similiar to this in plot. But this movie isn't perfect or extraordinary, sure back in 1959 it was one of the best audiences had ever seen, but does it stand the test of time?
Messala and Judah Ben-Hur, meet for the first time in a long time. But Messala became different, and became greedy for power. When the governor arrived and some pillars accidentally landed on him for Judah's home, he was to take the blame. His family ws locked up and he was enslaved to a ship, courtesy of Messala. When the ship was attacked by enemies, Judah escaped and saved someone's life. Then he gained his freedom, but not his revenge. And on to the chariot race...
The problem with the story is in most movies, the climax is in the end, the chariot race is the climax for the movie, but it isn't the end. We still have another hour or so of Judah and his family-turned lepers. But there is one point that is in Ben-Hur that other movies don't show, religion.
Throughout the point of the movie, we see Jesus, still growing up, since the timeline of the movie is the same as when Jesus was crucified. We don't see his face, but in the end, there is a spin to the plot.
It is a great movie, but it is flawed. |
