Does it work?

There is obviously a raging debate over this film, namely:did bringing Romeo and Juliet up to date make it more applicable to today's society or did the Shakesperean dialogue jar so badly with the modern setting and events that all credibility of plot was lost. I found that at times in the film I thought both things. It was interesting how a ball was transformed into a fancy dress party giving way to slightly too obvious symbolism( an angel and a knight in shining armour) and the substitution of guns for swords was also clever, but banishment? That just isn't a modern concept and niether are arranged marriages. Setting aside this unsolveable riddle the acting was not good. With the notable exceptions of Tibult and Juliet's nurse everyone else was more wooden than a stick, especially Claire Danes:most of what she said either sounded trivial or sarcastic. The visuals were however stunning, in particular the fish tank scene:a glimpse of true romantic inspiration and Baz Luhrman's characteristic spiralling shots and big close-ups drove the drama to an intense level. Overall worth seeing for the curiosity value. |
