It's a shame that so many people seem to dislike "To Die For". It's a possibility that most people are thrown off because of the subject matter and the dark tone that this film provides. When you factor in the two supposed flaws, what you really see is a very rich black comedy with a light touch on the suspense genre. Therefore, those who are comedy fanatics will be disapppointed that the film is too black for their tastes, and to those who are suspense lovers will find the content unsatisfying.
From my point of view, I feel that this movie is one of the most powerful satirical films centered around the televsion industry since "Network." For me, I thought this was a break-through role for Nicole Kidman as the self-centered, manipulative weathergirl who'll do absolutely anything to fulfill her dreams to become a television newscaster even if it means to demolish anything and anyone who stands in her way towards her ambition. She also goes to far by hiring some young teens (including a young Joaquin Phoenix) to kill her husband simply because "he got in her way." Next to Kidman, the other great standout is Illeana Douglass as Kidman's sister-in-law. It's a crime shame that few people talk about Douglass and the hard work she's done over the years.
In response to those that have seen the film, you are all entitled to express how you feel about the movie, you are not forced to love the film. However, I felt that this film is worthy to view even if it's a one time deal. |
