Titanic is a great movie. Yes, there's a lot of stiga involved when making that statement. Basically, I'm not the kind of person who likes these kind of movies. However, to me, Titanic is Nietzsche; I might not agree to it or like it's principles, but I have to admit, it's brilliant. First we'll look at some points:
Video: 98
Audio: 92
Scenes: 94
Overall Plot: 88
Specific Plot: 92
Humor: 83
Romance: 88
Drama: 92
Emotional Moments: 91
Consistency: 96
Ending: 94
The movie has stunning video effects. The lighting, angles, and camera movement were all close to perfect. This perfection is amazingly sustained by the high consistency of it throughout the whole movie. The movie itself is an iceberg. By just glancing through the movie without any attention, one misses the sublime qualities of the production and effects that are the basis of the whole movie. The music was extreme, and it fits well into the atmosphere of the movie. Most people don't notice any music until our lady Celine starts singing, but when you don't notice it, it means that chameleon is well blended into the overall presentation. The composers are great and the music director is extremely skilled in putting the right music in the right places.
Needless to say, the movie has many great scenes, in which is so well known for. However, many think that it's the backbone of the movie, which would be a big misconception. The scene is just a supporting trait for the dramatic climax. The only reason why the climax is underrated is because everyone there KNOWS that the ship will go down and there's nothing special about it. People are there simply to watch the boat sink instead of anticipating something positive that might happen. The emotional tension is gone, lets watch a big scene then!
True, the scenes are great. Not just the boat splitting and sinking, but throughout the movie, beautiful and stunning scenes are shown, and they set a great atmosphere. The overall plot is alright. Perhaps it will recieve a higher score if I didn't know what will happen. Perhaps not. It might be James Cameron's Romeo and Juliet as the whole audiance knows the tragedy before everything and watches the love and good feelings build up as their anticipation of it being destroyed increases every second. Anyway, in general, I don't see something too special in a story of 2 lovers on a boat that will sink. However, the specific scenes are great. Cameron skillfully utilizes many small conflicts to grab the audiances emotion. Like the situation where Rose was safe on the escape boat but decides to jump back on. Also, when Rose stands on the front of the ship, she opens her arms and becomes a bird; she feels freedom, something she never had before.
I think one of the movies strongest traits is the presentation of people's emotion's when they are facing death. What strikes me the most is the string quartet. When they know their fate, they thank each other for the pleasure and start playing music until their death. Also, the ship owner's(not sure is that his identity) calmness when his boat is going to sink gives you an emotional stimulant. The main character's in face of death, while still caring about each other and willing to sacrifice, is also touching.
Anyway, there's a whole bunch of great things to mention in the movie, but I can't really explain the movie then the movie can do itself. So if you havn't seen the movie, go watch it. Unless you are already prejudiced against it(which I was and still like it), you'll think it's great. True, Titanic isn't my type of movie, but it's gold in the industry. |
