Best Adventure Ever (Almost)

Painted with the grittily realistic brush of 1970's cinema, "The Man Who Would Be King" is actually a deeply romantic adventure from the master, John Huston. When you watch the movie and then see the extras on this disc, you will be overjoyed that it took Huston many years and many false starts to make this film. Like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (Another Huston Masterpiece) and even "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "The Man Who Would Be King" pulls you into this deceptively simple tale of two rogueish cast-offs from His Majesty's British Army through brilliant performances by Sean Connery and Michael Caine. This film will inspire you to finally get your passport and fly off to points unknown. What keeps me coming back to this film for many repeat viewings is the humor and the pure adrenaline rush it gives to the little kid inside you who dreams of lost cities and vast treasure and danger around every corner. I regard this film as an essential piece of cinema and without a doubt one of John Huston's Masterworks. It is very nearly a perfect film experience from a man who obviously had a very rich and interesting life. Five Stars! |
